Will I Lose Muscle on My GLP-1 Medication?

December 3, 2024

GLP-1 medications have gained attention as effective treatments for weight management and type 2 diabetes management. However, if you're taking these medications, you may wonder: Will I lose muscle along with fat?

The answer is nuanced. GLP-1 medications help regulate appetite and blood sugar by slowing digestion and affecting hunger hormones, leading to reduced calorie intake. As your body burns more calories than you consume, you lose weight.

However, without a strategic approach to diet and exercise, some of that weight loss can come from muscle mass in addition to fat.

Why Can Muscle Loss Happen?

When you lose weight rapidly, the body may break down both fat and lean tissue for energy.

Muscle loss can be more likely if protein intake is insufficient or if you aren’t engaging in regular strength-building activities.

How to Prevent Muscle Loss

  • Prioritize Protein: Aim for a high-protein diet to support muscle maintenance. Foods like lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and tofu are excellent options.
  • Incorporate Strength Training: Resistance exercises, such as weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, or using resistance bands, are key to preserving and building muscle while on GLP-1 medications.
  • Monitor Weight Loss Pace: Rapid weight loss can increase the risk of losing muscle. Work with your healthcare provider to achieve a gradual, sustainable rate of weight loss.
  • Stay Active: Engage in daily exercise, such as walking, stretching, or yoga, to support overall muscle health.

GLP-1 medications can be a powerful tool for improving health, but maintaining muscle mass requires attention to nutrition and exercise. Talk to your healthcare provider or a dietitian to develop a plan that supports your goals and preserves your strength as you lose weight.
